AN CROÍ

The ‘heart’ of Donegal Gaeltacht whiskey

Located in the west Donegal Gaeltacht village of Croithlí, County Donegal, set between the Wild Atlantic Coast and the stunning  Errigal mountain. Our distillery home is a restored historic stone cut building constructed in 1901. We want to connect this part of Ireland with the world through our craft whiskeys, double distilled in  Donegal’s first functioning licensed whiskey distillery in 180 years.

Enjoy the rich moments inspired through stories with family and friends, making new connections while having a ‘timlín’ of  Croithlí whiskey.

Connections with open and warm hearted people.

The home of Croithlí Whiskey  is steeped in the Gaeilge culture of generations past that is still alive along the West Donegal Wild Atlantic Way. Here, from the Islands poitín makers to alcohol distillation by St Colmcille at Errigal, who was  born just across the mountains from Croithlí village in Gartan, we are bringing back the connections through conversations about our whiskey.

Our beloved Crolly Distillery building

Lovingly restored and echoing the stories of its multiple previous lives, our building has been a significant presence in the life of the community since it was built in 1901. The building started its life as a carpet factory when the renowned Scottish carpet maker Alexander Morton began producing Donegal carpets here. These can found in Áras an Uachtaráin, The White House, Dublin Castle, Buckingham Palace and here at the Croithlí Distillery.

The War of Independence

Between 1916 and 1922 the building spent some time as barracks for the Royal Irish Constabulary, Private Charles Harsant was stationed in this building who was accidently shot dead here on 18 May 1921. There are still some bullet marks to be seen on the original walls of the distillery. He is laid to rest in Bunbeg Cemetery, not far from here, but has been known to drop in for a wee drink! Our other spirit.

The Crolly Dolls

From 1940 to 1978, our distillery building was home to the production of Crolly Dolls. The ‘Crolly Doll’ brand was established and famous around the globe. There were about 120 different designs over the years, handcrafted by the hardworking factory staff. Some are collector’s items, especially ones dressed in homespun tween and hand knits.
